Sports Premium Funding
The Government is providing £320 million of ‘Sport Premium’ funding per annum (academic year) to schools to support the delivery of PE & School Sport. This funding will be ring fenced and Ofsted will carry out a survey reporting on the first year’s expenditure and its impact.
All schools with 17 or more primary-aged pupils (5-11yrs) will receive a lump sum of £16,000 plus a premium of £10 per pupil, per annum.
School must spend this money to support the development of 5 Key Indicators:
-
The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
-
To help all children meet the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines of at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, with 30 minutes in school.
-
-
The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
-
Using sport to drive wider outcomes, such as behaviour, attendance, and achievement.
-
-
Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
-
Providing professional development and training so staff deliver high-quality PE lessons.
-
-
Broader experience of a range of sports and physical activities offered to all pupils
-
Offering a wide variety of sports and activities beyond the traditional curriculum.
-
-
Increased participation in competitive sport
-
Encouraging children to take part in competitions, both within school (intra-school) and between schools (inter-school).
-
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding might include:
- hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
- paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
- providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
- running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
- buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
- providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
- pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools
